John Daniel “Dee” Harrell August 25, 1919 – May 21, 2013 Services for John Daniel “Dee” Harrell, 93, of Cairo, GA, are at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the Tabernacle Baptist Church, Hwy 84 East, Cairo, GA. Pastor David Harrell, Pastor Glenn Scoggin and Pastor Miles Carter will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mr. Harrell passed away at Grady General Hospital, on Tuesday, May 21, 2013. Active pallbearers will be David Harrell, Jason Harrell, Trey Harrell, Doug Bell, Scott Glasure and Patrick Ouzts. Mr. Harrell was born on August 25, 1919, in Cairo, GA, to the late Oscar Ozroe Harrell and Sally Peacock Harrell. He served his country during WWII in the Army. On February 25, 1939, he married Alma Cliett Harrell, who preceded him in death on October 26, 2006. He was self-employed as a logger. He was recognized by Southern Loggin’ Times magazine in an article entitled “A Tribute to the 50-Year Veterans” and was listed on their Roster of Gold. He was of the Baptist faith. James O. Hall, Sr. October 14, 1941 - May 16, 2013 Graveside funeral services for James Otis Hall, Sr., 71, of Dalzell, SC, will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 24, 2013 in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Rev. Ed Green will officiate. Mr. Hall died on Thursday, May 16, 2013 at his residence in South Carolina. Mr. Hall was born on October 14, 1941, in Cairo, GA, to the late William Ermon Hall and Mary Gainous Hall. Mr. Hall retired from the United States Air Force after 23 years of service and was a Vietnam Veteran. He later worked for Wells Fargo Armored Car Service and was a member of the Jamil Temple, Hillcrest Masonic Lodge, VFW, American Legion, MRMA and the DAV. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather. Survivors include: his wife, Phyllis N. Hall of Dalzell, SC; children, Donna Lynn Freeman of Borden, SC, Rhoda Dee Hess of Easley, SC, James Otis Hall, Jr. of Dalzell, SC; one special aunt, Lillian Ferrell of Cairo, GA; and eight grandchildren. Eddie A. Horne November 16, 1946 - May 16, 2013 Funeral services for Eddie A. Horne, 66, of Cairo, Ga., will be held at 3 p.m., on Sunday, May 19, 2013, at the Chapel of Clark Funeral Home in Cairo, Ga., with internment at Greenwood Cemetery. Services will be conducted by Matt Walker. Music will be provided by Susan Poole and Shirley Singletary. Eddie passed away Thursday, May 16, 2013, at his home. Eddie, a 1966 graduate of Cairo High School, served in the U.S. Army from 1966-68, stationed in Frankfurt, Germany. After his discharge, he worked as the supply clerk at Sunnyland Packing Co. in Thomasville, Ga., for 30 years. Eddie loved spending time with his family, working around the house, the music of Elvis Presley and Clint Eastwood movies. Eddie is survived by his wife, Inez Horne; son Robert and his wife Christy of Las Vegas, Nev.; daughter Melanie and her husband Todd Harvey of McDonough, Ga.; daughter Kerri and her husband Richard Rupp of Chelsea, Ala.; and son Richard and his wife Emily of Dublin, Ga.; seven grandchildren: Sara Harvey, Josh Harvey, Abbey Rupp, Karsten Rupp, Emma Rupp, Joseph Horne and Caroline Horne; brother-in-law Danny Cliett and his wife Jane; sister-in-law Sandra Rackley and her husband Dennis. Eddie also is survived by his loving nieces – Cristie Watts Bertrand, Melissa Mancill, Carissa Walker, Heather Cliett and Sherrie Jones. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Hall Horne; father, Arnold Horne; uncle, James Spearman; and nephews, Brandon Cliett and Nathan Mancill. He served in the United States Air Force during the Viet Nam War and had a brother killed in action while serving in the United States Marine Corps during the same period. He was an Electrical Contractor and owner of Red River Electric Co., Inc. in Princeton, LA. He was of the Christian faith. Leland Ponder May 13, 1930 – May 13, 2013 Services for Leland James Ponder, 83, of Cairo, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 15, 2013, at Pine Park Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Rev. Mr. Ponder passed away at his home on Monday, May 13, 2013. Mr. Ponder was born on May 13, 1930, in Cairo, GA, to the late Calvin Foster Ponder and Lillian Mills Ponder. On February 15, 1963, he married Gladys Music Ponder, who survives. He was a retired overhauler with Coats America and long-time farmer who produced seasonable fruits and vegetables, hosting popular u-pick fields in rural Grady County. A story teller extraordinaire, he never met a stranger, and brought a smile to everyone. He was a member of Gordon Heights Baptist Church and more recently attended services at Pine Park Baptist Church. Joyce Harrell Butler September 29, 1930 – May 7, 2013 Services for Nellie Joyce Harrell Butler, 82, of Cairo, GA, will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Friday, May 10, 2013, at Pine Level Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Rev. Jim Weaver will officiate with interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mrs. Butler passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013, at her home in Cairo, GA. Active pallbearers: Gerald Driggers, Steven Prince, Stacy Butler, Darrell Harrell, Roger Harrell and Jeffrey Harrell. Mrs. Butler was born on September 29, 1930, in Cairo, GA, to the late Oscar Ozzro Harrell and Hattie Miller Harrell. On June 5, 1954, she married Fred McDaniel Butler, who survives. She was a Staff Member of Roddenbery Memorial Library in Cairo, GA in the 1940’s and 1950’s. She served with the Library System of Elmendorf Air Force Base in Anchorage, AL, Main Base and Hospital Libraries. She also worked with the General Telephone System of West Texas located in San Angelo, TX. She gave up her vocation to become a full-time wife and mother traveling throughout much of the world as a military dependent. She was a member and Sunday School Teacher of Pine Level Baptist Church. Survivors include: her husband of 59 years, Fred McDaniel Butler of Cairo, GA; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and John Tillis of Williamsburg, VA; son Michael David Butler of Cairo, GA; grandchildren Shelby Elaine Tillis and Luke Aaron Tillis, both of Williamsburg, VA; Sara Michelle Butler and Hailey Marie Butler, both of Cairo, GA; brother, Audrey Harrell of Cairo, GA; sister Grace Ponder of Thomasville, GA; half-brother, J. Earl Douglas Crew, Sr. June 29, 1926-May 1, 2013 Funeral services for Earl D. Crew, Sr., 86, will be held at Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Cairo, Georgia, on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 11 AM. Visitation will be held at Clark Funeral Home, Cairo, Georgia on Friday, May 3, 2013, from 6 PM-8 PM. Mr. Crew died May 1, 2013 at his home in Cairo, Georgia. Born June 29, 1926 in Whigham, Georgia, he was the son of the late Willie M. Crew and Annie Mae Collins Crew. On August 13, 1950 in Jacksonville, Florida, he married Anne Mills Crew, who survives. Mr. Crew served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. He was a former mayor of Whigham, and was a retired banker. He also served the City of Whigham as a city councilman and as a volunteer fire chief. As a young man, before military service, he served as interim scoutmaster for the Whigham Boy Scout troop. He was an avid golfer who spent many enjoyable hours on the golf course. He was especially proud of “shooting his age” on a few occasions. Survivors include sons Doug Crew (Jackie) of Thomasville, Georgia and Clayton Crew (Candace) of Marietta, Georgia and daughter Nancy (Richard Milford) of Athens, Georgia; grandchildren Julianne Crew of Atlanta, Joanne Anderson of Washington, DC, Cailie Crew, Caroline Crew and Alyssa Crew of Calhoun, Georgia, and Crew Anderson of Athens, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Cecil Crew and Elmer Crew. Emma Louise Butler Oistad December 5, 1923 – April 30, 2013 Emma Louise Butler Oistad passed peacefully to her eternal rest on April 30, 2013. Born on December 5, 1923, in Calvary, Georgia, Louise was preceded in death by her parents (Ira and Alice Butler), brothers (Bill, Ed, John and Paul David Butler) and sisters (Mildred Swinson and Mary Cullifer). She is survived by her daughter, Lisa McDonald – husband, Pat, of the New Orleans area, her son, Erik Oistad – wife, Linda, of the Dallas area and numerous extended family members that she loved. When her brother, Paul David, was no longer able to continue active military service due to World War II battle wounds sustained overseas, Louise enlisted in the United States Navy “to take his place.” In 1954, she received an honorable discharge after her enlistment was concluded with the title of Radar Specialist 3rd class. Louise maintained a lifelong, patriotic dedication to her country. Louise lived in Metairie, a New Orleans suburb for many years as a homemaker. She moved to Tallahassee, FL in the late 1990’s. Louise had a creative, artistic spirit. She was an accomplished baker and seamstress and later in life became a prolific painter and poet. Her greatest happiness was being with friends and family, sitting with a fishing pole on the side of a pond, and knowing that the Lord is great in all things. Her Christian faith was very important to her, and she was active in church life for as long as she was able. She served as an Elder at Parkway Presbyterian Church in Metairie, and she had been a member of the Eastern Star organization. A memorial service with a military salute will be held at the Clark Funeral Home, 334 South Broad Street, Cairo, Georgia (clarkfuneral.com) at 2:00 p.m. with visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, May 6, 2013. Burial will follow near to her beloved mother in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Whigham, Georgia. A special service for residents and staff will be held in the Frances Chapel at the Westminster Oaks Retirement Community, 4449 Meandering Way, Tallahassee, FL at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, May 7, 2013. Mrs. Davenport was born on June 7, 1939, in Cairo, GA, to the late Emory Houston and Monell Brinson Houston. On June 7, 1959, she married Francis Davenport, who survives. She was a cashier with Harvey’s Grocery Store, and a member of Capel Baptist Church. Donald L. Waldrop, Sr. August 18, 1928 – April 30, 2013 Private funeral services for Donald L. Interment was held in Woodlawn Cemetery, Whigham, GA. Mr. Waldrop passed away at Pelham Parkway Nursing Home in Pelham, GA, on Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Mr. Waldrop was born on August 18, 1928, in Whigham, GA, to Cleon O. Waldrop, Sr. and Martha Ann Tippett Waldrop. He was a retired U. S. Army serviceman with 23 years of service. He served in occupied Germany after World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He was a 50 year member of the Whigham Masonic Lodge #356 and a member of the America Legion #122. He was of the Methodist faith. Donald loved to work in his yards. He loved his family and grandchildren most of all. Mr. Meeks was born on July 24, 1926, in Swainsboro, GA, to the late Quincy Meeks and Daisy Henry Meeks. He served his country in the Army during the Korean War and World World II. In June of 1956, he married Mary Kittle Meeks, who preceded him in death in October of 1992. Until his retirement, he was a truck driver for Roadway Trucking. He was of the Baptist faith. As a self-employed barber for over 35 years, Edgar often traveled to give haircuts to shut-ins and his friends in nursing homes. He was an avid gardener that loved to share his bounty with friends and neighbors. He loved gospel music and attended gospel sings with his wife. He had a great love for his family and he loved spending time outdoors. He was a member of Tired Creek Primitive Baptist Church. Mrs. Galbreath was born on June 5, 1931, in Cairo, GA, to the late Alonzo Williams and Susie Logue Williams. Myrna graduated from Cairo High School, Cairo, GA, in 1948 and graduated from Perry Business School, Albany, GA. She married Gelon Galbreath in May of 1958, and they had three children, Carol, David and Bonnie. She worked for the Florida Supreme Court, Clark Realty Company and retired as a secretary with Gordon Heights Baptist Church in Cairo. She lived her entire life in Cairo until the last 5 years of her life when she moved with her husband to Lakeland, GA, to be closer to family due to declining health. Myrna was an avid reader and had a love of travel. After retirement, she and Gelon took many vacations and were fortunate to be able to travel around the world. She enjoyed spending time with her children and especially her grandchildren. She was a member of Long Branch Baptist Church, Cairo, GA and most recently attended Lakeland United Methodist Church, Lakeland, GA.
