Funeral services for Winnie Jean Maxwell Hester, 90, of Cairo, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, August 31, 2017, at the First Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Rev. Chris Allen will officiate. Interment will be in Trinity Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, Whigham, GA. Mrs. Hester passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital, Thomasville, GA, on Monday, August 28, 2017.
Active pallbearers will be Jerry Maxwell, Dennis Maxwell, Paul Belcher, Jimmy Powe, Brad Hester and Gary Jones. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Cairo Pilot Club and members of TEL Fellowship Sunday School Class of Cairo First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hester was born on October 4, 1926, in Grady County, GA, to the late Monroe Augustus Maxwell and Elizabeth Morgan Coker Maxwell. On July 1, 1948, she married Leo Pervis Hester, Sr., who preceded her in death on April 6, 2002. For over 40 years, she was a banker with Cairo Banking Company-Ameris Bank. She was a member of Cairo First Baptist Church.
Mrs. Hester was a charter member of the Pilot Club of Cairo, GA, which was chartered by Pilot International on January 18, 1979. She served in all capacities which included the local club President. The highlight of her club work was serving as the Lt. Governor for the South Georgia District. She also served for over 25 years on the Board of the American Cancer Society, Grady County Unit and was very active in the Relay For Life. She was a member of the Cairo Woman’s Club and a member of the First Baptist Church TEL Fellowship Sunday School Class, where she currently served as President.
Survivors include: daughter, Rita Hester of Norcross, GA; son, Leo Pervis Hester, Jr. (Susan) of Dothan, AL; grandson, Brad Hester (Amy) of Huntsville, AL; great-grandchildren, Lauren Hester and Penny Hester, both of Huntsville, AL; sister-in-law, Dot Hester of Whigham, GA; and a brother-in-law, James Hester of Cleveland, GA.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband; and a brother, Gwinnett Maxwell.
The family will receive friends at the First Baptist Church on Thursday, August 31, 2017, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., in the church sanctuary.
