Sherley Meadows Marshall
November 13, 1938 – November 19, 2022
Sherley Meadows Marshall, 84, of Cairo, Georgia passed away on November 19, 2022, in the comfort of her home and in the presence of those who loved her.
Born November 13, 1938, in Haines City, FL to Edgar and Gertie Blackburn Meadows, she was the only daughter and the oldest of three children.
Sherley graduated from Moultrie Senior High School in 1956 and went to work briefly for Dr. Mathis in Moultrie. On February 13, 1960, Sherley married Sonny Marshall, also a 1956 graduate of Moultrie Senior High School, and they moved to Cairo, Georgia, where Sonny would start a new business. As Sonny worked to grow the business, Sherley embraced the opportunity to stay home and raise their two children.
Sherley and Sonny were fortunate to travel extensively throughout the world during his business career, and following his retirement, they continued their travels in the United States. Sherley and Sonny enjoyed endless hours of travel in their RV together. They visited and explored every state together except Alaska!
They ultimately decided to sell their family home in the country and build a new home on the golf course in Cairo, where they both discovered a passion for golf that Sonny continues to enjoy today!
Sherley was a voracious reader, a member of Southern Magnolias, she loved to play bridge, enjoyed shopping, entertaining, and was an excellent cook!
She was able to remain in her home during her lengthy illness where Sonny was able to tend to her every need. Special caregivers Freddie Coakley, Gloice Weems and Mary Goodman assisted Sonny with her care over the last few years. This compassionate care insured that Sherley was lovingly attended on a daily basis. The family is profoundly grateful for this care and the assistance of Hospice nurses Kim and Ashley in the last weeks of her life.
She was preceded in death by her parents Edgar and Gertie, as well as two brothers, Vernon (Marion) and Ronnie Meadows.
Sherley is survived by her husband, Sonny. Her greatest joy was being a mom to their two children, Keith and Gayla, and she often spoke about how proud she was of the spouses they had chosen. To her, Whitney and Steve were blessings and she loved them like her own children. She leaves a legacy of four grandchildren, Ashton Smith Jones (Street), Michael Marshall (Kelley), Marshall Smith (Lauren), Garrett Marshall (Ashley) and three great grandchildren, Lockley Smith, E Jones, and McLean Marshall.
A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 23, 2022, at the Clark Funeral Home Chapel, Cairo, GA. A family friend, Kevin Griffin will officiate. The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service.
Memorials may be made in Sherley’s memory to the Cairo First United Methodist Church, 318 S. Broad Street, Cairo GA 39828.
