John Robert “Bob” Bearss
July 25, 1935 – October 13, 2023

Graveside funeral services for John Robert “Bob” Bearss, 88, of Cairo, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, October 17, 2023, in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA.  Rev. Becky Willis will officiate.  Mr. Bearss passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA, on Friday, October 13, 2023.

Mr. Bearss was born on July 25, 1935, in Columbus, GA, to the late Clyde Ivan Bearss and Florence Grimes Bearss.  He served his country in the United States Army.  On May 10, 1959, he married Mary Laneve Whitley Bearss, who survives. Until his retirement, he was a professional horticulturist with Wight’s Nursery in Cairo.  Everyone lovingly called him “Troop” that worked with him.  He was a devoted member of the Cairo Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include: his wife, Mary Laneve Bearss of Cairo, GA; sons, Paul Bearss (Celina) of Cairo, GA, David Bearss (Gail) of Dublin, GA; grandchildren, Britton Bearss (Sarah) of Crestview, FL, Jennifer Lane of Thomasville, GA, Brian Bearss of Dublin, GA, Eric Bearss of Calhoun, GA, Lexston Bearss of  Braselton, GA; great-grandchild, Bodhi Bearss of Crestview, FL; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by: his parents; sister, Deloris Bearss Elwell; and brothers, William Arthur Bearss and James Edward Bearss.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Bearss’ memory to: Birdsong Nature Center, 2106 N Meridian Rd, Thomasville, GA 31792; or the Grady County 4-H Shotgun Team, c/o Deron Rehberg, 65 11th Avenue, NE, Cairo, Georgia 39828.

The family will receive friends in the Greenwood Cemetery on October 17, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
