John Merritt Shiver

John Merritt Shiver, 79, of Cairo, GA, passed away at Archbold Living – Cairo, Cairo, GA, on Friday, May 24, 2024.
Mr. Shiver was born on September 26, 1944, in Miami, FL, to the late Roswell Merritt Shiver and the late Verna Wellons Shiver of Americus, GA.
He is survived by his daughter, Blair Shiver (Michael Nealis) of Marathon, FL; son, Kevin Barrington (Angela) of Bentonville, AK; grandchildren, Amelia Nealis of Marathon, FL and Zachary Barrington of R, AK; brother, David “Buck” Shiver (Kyle) of Atlanta, GA; and niece, Amanda Morrison (Judson) of Atlanta. His nephew, Brent Neil, Shiver, preceded him in death.
Shiver grew up in Americus, GA, and graduated from Americus High School, where he lettered in football and basketball. He attended Dartmouth College and graduated from the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Kappa Sigma fraternity. He earned his JD from the University of Georgia School of Law and was a member of Phi Alpha Delta. He had been an attorney in Elberton, GA, before moving to Cairo, GA, where he passed. Shiver was a self-taught tennis player who enjoyed tournaments across the state; he was also an avid hunter and fisher.
