Helen Jeanette Hand Hurst

Helen Jeanette Hand Hurst, 85, of Cairo, GA, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, October 25, 2024.

Jeanette was born on July 6, 1939, in Whigham, GA, to the late Paul Hand and the late Mattie Strickland Hand. On January 15, 1961, she married Raymond F. Hurst, who preceded her in death on December 15, 2016. They were married for 55 years.

Jeanette loved her community and was cherished for her role as a loving wife, devoted mother, and caring friend. In addition to her role as a dedicated mother to her two daughters, she was a member of First Baptist Church of Cairo, where she taught Sunday school and shared her musical talents.

Her commitment to service extended beyond her church community, serving as the president of the Woman’s Club, an active member of the Cairo Garden Club, a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, and a piano teacher. She was affectionately known as Precious, Mama, and Nana.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Hurst Patrick (Lee) of Quitman, GA and Sharon Hurst McGoldrick (John) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; grandchildren, Chase Patrick (Sara) of Quitman, GA, and Bowen Patrick of Athens, GA; Alexandra McGoldrick and Olivia McGoldrick, both of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; brother, Gary Hand of Tallahassee, FL; brother-in-law, Ken Ferrell of Valdosta, GA; nephews, Scott Ferrell (Toni) of Tallahassee, FL and Daniel Hand of Tallahassee, FL; niece, Jill Ferrell of Valdosta, GA; as well as a host of other extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.

A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
