Henley Irving Ward

Funeral services for Henley Irving Ward, 89, of Cairo, GA, are at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, July 7, 2016, at the First Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Dr. Ron McCaskill will officiate. Services will conclude at the Church. Private interment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mr. Ward passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA, on Monday, July 4, 2016.
Mr. Ward was born on January 7, 1927, in Buena Vista, GA, to the late Irving and Annie Mae Carroll Ward. He graduated as the Valedictorian of the Class of 1944 from Buena Vista High School. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII, where he trained in the Japanese Language. He received additional training in Japanese at Yale University. After his Army service, using the G.I Bill, he continued college at the University of Georgia and received his degree in Pharmacy. After graduating college in 1949, he married his longtime sweetheart, Mary Harvey Ward, who survives. In 1955, Henley and fellow pharmacist, Bert Harper, started Cairo Pharmacy. In 1977, he sold his business and was involved in real estate. He was a member of the Cairo First Baptist Church. He was a deacon in the Baptist Church for over 40 years.
Survivors include: wife of 67 years, Mary Harvey Ward of Cairo, GA; son, Dennis Ward, daughter-in-law, Sharon B. Ward; two grandchildren, Candace M. Childs (A. J.), Joshua M. Ward; two great-grandchildren, Kady A. Childs and Andy B. Childs, all of Cairo.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; son, Philip Irving Ward; brothers, Gurney Ward, Stanley Ward; and a sister, Myrtle W. Snider.
The family will receive friends at Clark Funeral Home on Wednesday, July 6, 2016, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
