Funeral services for James Carlton “J. C.” Cox, 83, of Cairo, GA, are at 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 18, 2017, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Pastor Miles Carter will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mr. Cox passed away at his home in Cairo, GA, on Thursday, September 14, 2017.
Active pallbearers will be his nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be Marvin Bell, Rayford Crawford, Frank Hubert, and Mark Johnson
Mr. Cox was born on June 26, 1934, in Pelham, GA, to the late Carlton Cox and Maude Godwin Cox. He was preceded by his first wife, Dorothy Merle Woods Cox, and on April 24, 1998, he married Lydia McNew Cox, who survives. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps for 30 years before retirement. He was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church. J. C. was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He loved working in his yard, spending time with his family, and fishing.
Survivors include: his wife, Lydia McNew Cox of Cairo, GA; daughters, Debbie Cooper (Elam) of Cairo, GA, Carla Powe (Eddie) of Cairo, GA; son, Ellis Cox (Denise) of Cairo, GA; grandchildren, Torrey Daughtry (Beth) of Chiefland, FL, Ashley Daigle (Dr. Adam) of Tallahassee, FL, Darian Powe of Clemson, S.C., Madelyne Powe of Cairo, GA, Harrison Miller of Thomasville, GA, Jeremy Cooper of Atlanta, GA, Jamie Jantzen (Seth) of Chico, CA, Mindy Handschumaker of Westwood, CA, Brittany Handschumaker of Westwood, CA; brothers, Richard Cox (Jeanette) of Cairo, GA, Douglas Cox (Gayle) of Cairo, GA; sister-in-law, Frances Cox of Cairo, GA; step-daughter, Karen Handschumaker (Glen) of Westwood, CA; step-son, Nathan B. Miller (Shelby) of Dahlonega, GA; great-grandchildren, Elliott Daigle of Tallahassee, FL, Noah James Jantzen of Chico, CA; a host of nieces and nephews; and special caregivers, Betty Lurry, Brenda Pearson, Audrey Johnson, and Pricilla Walton.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; wife, Dorothy Merle Woods Cox; step-son, Robert Williams; brothers, Wallace Cox, Turner Cox, Ellis Cox, and Earl Cox; sister, Verlen Weiss.
