Funeral services for Mable Elkins Thomas, 86, of Cairo, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 2, 2017, at Eastside Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Rev. Carl Harrell will officiate. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mrs. Thomas passed away at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta, GA, on Tuesday, November 28, 2017, after a brief illness.
Active pallbearers will be Bob Jones, Dickey Jones, Harrison Strickland, Coleman Norris, Brice Ponder, Brandon Ponder, and Trey Norris. Honorary pallbearers will be John Elkins, Willie Meggs, Clayton Ulmer, and John Ulmer.
Mrs. Thomas was born on March 8, 1931, in Cairo, GA, to the late Gedie Elkins and Lillian Ulmer Elkins. Mable loved fishing on the Ochlockonee River and Lake Talquin. She loved shopping and visiting Biloxi. She was a member of Eastside Baptist Church, Cairo, GA.
Survivors include: sons, Frankie L. Mathis (Judy) of Leesburg, GA, M. Chadd Mathis (Gina) of Valdosta, GA; a daughter, Marsha Lynn Ponder of Cairo, GA; grandchildren, Tonya Norris (Trey) of Dothan, AL, Tammy Brown of Leesburg, GA, Brice Ponder (Leslie) of Cairo, GA, Brandon Ponder of Cairo, GA, Madeline Mathis, Bryanne Mathis, Ali Reese Mathis, all of Valdosta, GA; great-grandchildren, Cassidy Norris, Coleman Norris, both of Dothan, AL, Harrison Strickland, Anna Claire Strickland, both of Leesburg, GA, Ella Brown of Leesburg, GA, Makenna Ponder of Thomasville, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
She was preceded in death by: her parents; her husband, Clifton Lamar Mathis, her husband, Joe Thomas; sister, Lucy Jones; and brothers, Emory Elkins, Clower Elkins.
