Peggy Whitfield Walden
July 15, 1937 – January 16, 2025

Funeral services for Peggy Whitfield Walden, 87, of Cairo, GA, are at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Tired Creek Primitive Baptist Church, Whigham, GA. Elder Jon Mizell and Elder Thad Marshall will officiate. Private family interment will be in Godwin Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mrs. Walden passed away at her home, Cairo, GA, on Thursday, January 16, 2025.

Active pallbearers will be Jonathan Long, Thomas Long, Andrew Long, Will Walden, Russell Collins and Craig Jones.

Mrs. Walden was born on July 15, 1937, in Cairo, GA, to the late Charles Whitfield and Kate Dixon Whitfield. She grew up in the Reno Community and graduated from Cairo High School in 1955. She was a graduate of Georgia Southern College and began her teaching career in Conyers, GA before returning to Cairo to teach at Southside Elementary. On December 27, 1960, she married Donald Walden, who survives. Mrs. Walden was a faithful member of Tired Creek Primitive Baptist Church.

In addition to being a teacher, Mrs. Walden was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. She was known for her outstanding southern cooking, and family members proclaimed her fried okra, lacy cornbread and chocolate cake the World’s Best. Her home and kitchen were always open to family and friends.

Survivors include: her husband of 64 years, Donald Walden; daughter, Patti Long (John); son, Tracy Walden (Janet); grandchildren, Jonathan Long, Thomas Long (Shannon), Andrew Long and Will Walden; sisters-in-laws, Laura Whitfield and Marcella Walden Akridge; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by: her parents; sisters, Merle Henderson, Rebecca VanMeter, Vannye Dady, Sylvia Collins; brothers, Clyde Whitfield, Hubert Whitfield and Carroll Whitfield.

The family would like to express gratitude to her devoted caregivers, Ruth Cox, Shirley Hopkins, Gail Wooten; a special neighbor, Dennis Darsey; and Gentiva Hospice.
