Raymond Edward Sholar
January 2, 1932 – June 18, 2020
Raymond Edward Sholar, 88, of Cairo, GA, passed away at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA, on Thursday, June 18, 2020. The family will have a celebration of life at a later date.
Mr. Sholar was born on January 2, 1932, in Cairo, GA, to the late Samuel Bascom Sholar and Maggie Chason Sholar. After attending Georgia Southwestern State University, he served his country in the United States Navy for 4 years. After his military service, he attended Florida State University and he started dating his future wife, Bettye Boutwell from Pavo, GA. They were wed on December 21, 1956 and married for over 63 years. Raymond started his work career at the family grocery store, Sholar’s Grocery. Raymond and Bettye purchased the family store and eventually started his chain of convenience food stores known as Pac-a-Sac. He offered goods and services to so many local neighborhoods in the area and provided employment opportunities for many individuals. Raymond was known for his love of golf and FSU football. He loved fresh and salt-water fishing. He was a member of the Cairo Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include: his wife, Bettye Sholar of Cairo, GA; children, Kim Tober (Dennis) of Tallahassee, FL, Raymond Sholar, Jr. (Heidi) of Cairo, GA, Jeffrey Sholar (Celina) of Cairo, GA, Carla Whatley (Al) of Cairo, GA; grandchildren, Sam Sholar, Nicole Watson, Cayse Watson, Brady Whatley, Greyson Whatley, Alicia Sholar, Rebekah Sholar; great-grandchild, Wade Sholar; and a sister, Patricia Hozey of Waynesboro, GA.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; sisters, Martha Lavenburg, Katherine Rackley; and a brother, Waymond Sholar.
