Walter Horace Baggett
July 27, 1932 – March 25, 2025

Funeral services for Walter Horace Baggett, 92, of Cairo, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Monday, March 31, 2025, at Gordon Heights Baptist Church, Cairo, GA. Rev. William Hurst and Rev. John Paul Hassick will officiate. Interment with Military Honors will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Cairo, GA. Mr. Baggett passed away peacefully at Archbold Memorial Hospital in Thomasville, GA, on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
Active pallbearers will be the Deacons of Gordon Height Baptist Church.
He was born on July 27, 1932, the oldest of 4 children of L. N. “Babe” Baggett and Johnnie M. Godwin Baggett. On June 16, 1973, he married “Joann” Horton Baggett. Horace served his country in the United States Marines for 3 years. Eighteen months was served in Korea, where he was in the Weapons Platoon Division, earning many awards and medals.
He was the owner and operator of Midway Grocery until his retirement. His specialties were his secret recipe sausage sandwiches and barbecue. Horace loved greeting and interacting with people. He was a people person and rarely met a stranger. He enjoyed his small garden, flowers and well-maintained yard.
Horace was a member of Gordon Heights Baptist Church in Cairo, where he served as an usher. He was an active member of the American Legion Post 122 and a life member of the 1st Marine Division Association.
Survivors include: his wife, “Joann” Baggett of Cairo, GA; sons, Gregg Baggett (Lisa) of Cairo, GA, Michael Baggett of Cairo, GA; daughter, Carol Kelly of Nashville, GA; granddaughter, Miranda Lyons (Timothy) of Midlothian, VA; great-grandchildren, Alexandria Lyons, Avery Lyons, both of Midlothian, VA; sister, Hedy B. Donaldson (Ralph) of Cairo, GA; sister-in-law, Judy K. Baggett of Cairo, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, E. Talmadge Baggett and J. Perry Baggett, Sr.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Mr. Baggett’s memory to: Gordon Heights Baptist Church, 1351 5th Street SE, Cairo, GA 39828.
