William Oliver Chester

Funeral services for William Oliver Chester, 97, of Whigham, GA, are at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 20, 2024, at the Chapel of Clark Funeral Home, Cairo, GA. Rev. Mike Mobley will officiate. Services will conclude at the chapel. Private interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Whigham, GA. Mr. Chester passed away at his residence, Whigham, GA, on Friday, February 14, 2025.
Mr. Chester was born on July 23, 1927, in Whigham, GA, to the late Oliver Leland Chester and Mary Darsey Chester. On December 21, 1954, he married Ann Palmer Chester, who preceded him in death on July 2, 2011. They were married for over 56 years.
He attended Turkey Creek for grammar school and graduated from Whigham High School. He farmed for many years and then along with his son, David, was the owner operator of Chester Logging. William was a quiet man who led by example whether by reading the Bible and praying daily to working hard and keeping busy. He loved being out in nature, fishing, and had fun making up his own recipes. William enjoyed telling stories about life on the farm and changes made throughout the years from farming with mules to using tractors. Most of all he loved growing food to feed people by farming or from his garden. He was a member of Orange Springs Methodist Church and the Whigham United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his son, David Chester; daughter, Carol Chester; grandsons, Dylan Chester and Branson Chester, all of Whigham, GA; as well as a host of nieces, nephews and other extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; son, Donald “Don” Chester; sister, Mary Frances Chester McCluskey; and brothers, Steven Chester and Robert Chester.
